RECENTLY, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality residents received alerts that the Electricity and Energy Directorate will be kicking off the second phase of the Token Identifier (TID) rollout programme to reset pre-paid meters.
Residents were informed that pre-paid electricity meters must be updated, or they will not be able to recharge their meter with new tokens and will be without electricity supply as a result.
In addition to the announcements on the municipality’s social media pages, some residents have received SMSs that their meters need updating. However, the meter numbers quoted in the text messages do not match their actual meter numbers. When asked about what procedure residents should expect to follow, Municipal Spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, responded.
“Officials from Electricity and Energy will be visiting households who have not yet updated their pre-paid electricity meters in Ward 14, including areas such as Algoa Park, KwaFord, New Brighton, and Cradock Place. All meters must be updated before November 24.”
Residents are encouraged to contact their ward councillor or call the Electricity and Energy call centre.
“All officials will have official identification cards. Some of the wards have already migrated, and there are still plans to visit other wards. The community can follow our social media platforms. We are also going out on radio, and they can also contact their ward councillor,” he said.
Soyaya stressed that all meters can be “key-changed” before November 24.
“Failure to do so will result in paying for the replacement cost of your meter, which ranges between R2 000 (Domestic) and R25 000 (Large Business). For more information, please contact 041 506 5595,” he said.
