The two suspects will appear before the Gqeberha Magistrates Court soon after they were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the early hours of Thursday morning, September 19, in the Qunu area, Bethelsdorp.

According to police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, a 60-year-old male and a 59-year-old female were in possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition in their home after a special SAPS joint operation, Silapha 2, was conducted.

He said they will be arrested in terms of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.

Beetge added that the joint operation between the National Intervention Unit, Tactical Response Team, EC Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Team, Crime Intelligence, and detectives of the Anti-Gang Unit focused on gang activities in the area and searched four premises in the Qunu informal settlement area.

Beetge reported that the two firearms found in the possession of the two suspects were a 9mm pistol and a .32 pistol, with serial numbers removed, and they were confiscated.

He further added that the ammunition will undergo further forensic and ballistic analysis.

“A total of 27 rounds of 9mm and 24 rounds of shotgun ammunition were also found and confiscated.”
