EASTERN Cape MEC of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Sibulele Ngongo, announced the Eastern Cape Sport and Recreation Achievers’ nominees lists during a function at the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport at Nelson Mandela University in Summerstrand, on Wednesday.

Ngongo revealed that the province decided to honour, celebrate, and congratulate the province’s sports finalists nominated for the 2024 Sport and Recreation Achievers Awards.

“It is a great humility to have witnessed such sterling work, sheer determination and passion in the field of play, from the touchlines, the grandstands, and from various sporting structures across the entire province,” said Ngongo.

She stated she was also happy to announce that some of these athletes recently participated in the Paralympics in France, and they continue to hold the province high in the national and international community.

“We will hold the function at the Boardwalk on 11 October to recognise and celebrate the individuals, federations, and teams who excelled both on and off the field for the period 1 June 2023 to 30 June 2024. We have 25 categories this time around, but lots of nominees come from Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Ngongo.

PE Express sport freelancer, Selby Madikane, has been nominated in the Photographer of the Year category, where he will compete with two Buffalo City Metro photographers, Alan Eason and Sinobomi Majangaza.

Madikane will also compete with the locals Vuyokazi Nkanjeni and Anathi Wulushe from the Buffalo City Metro in the Journalist of the Year category.

The local Para-athlete, Jaco Smit, who recently competed at the North-East German Athletics Championships in Germany, motivated the youth to work very hard in order to succeed in life.

Another local athlete, Mbasa Qilingele, who is a powerlifting star, urged the youth to believe in themselves but refrain from taking drugs.
