A case of attempted murder and illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened by SAPS Humewood following a shooting incident discovered by Atlas Security, in the early hours January 28 in Summerstrand.
In a statement by Atlas Security, the incident occurred near the bus stop on Marine Drive, where an Atlas Security vehicle was alerted that two individuals were seeking urgent assistance.
“They reported that one of their acquaintances had been shot and the armed suspect had fled towards the back of one of the nearby hotels,” the statement reported.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, confirmed the incident, stating that at about 04:00, it is alleged that a 35-year-old male suspect shot another adult male in his early 30s in his side on Marine Drive.
“Upon approaching the hotel, the suspect was spotted inside the premises.
“With assistance from the hotel’s security team, Atlas members gained access and confronted the suspect,” the statement added.
The statement revealed that the initially the suspect denied involvement in the shooting and possession of a firearm. However, Atlas members found a black moon bag containing ammunition hidden behind a wall after searching the hotel grounds for evidence.
“Further investigation led to the discovery of a firearm concealed in a pot plant near where the suspect was first spotted,” the statement further revealed.
Beetge noted that it was a .22 revolver and ammunition.
“The suspect later admitted possession of the firearm but could not provide details about its origin or ownership.
“All evidence was secured and handed over to law enforcement authorities,” the statement concluded.
