YOUTH Day is not only a day to celebrate the youth but also to empower and equip them for the future.
Quintin Baatjies from the office of Ward 37, which includes Extensions 27, 28, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 and 36, is taking this approach and initiated a career info session to coincide with Youth Day this Saturday at 12:00.
The youth of the area are invited to the event, which will take place at the Kleinskool rugby stadium, also known as the Suburbans rugby field, and will offer information about careers, job creation and study opportunities.
Baatjies said, that as the ward councillor’s assistant, his office has to deal with many young, unemployed people knocking on their doors for help. This inspired him to arrange an info session about employment options.
“I’ve decided to assist the young people of our area with information, especially those in Grades 11 and 12 as well as school dropouts.
“I don’t always have the answers to these young people’s questions, which is why I invited various organisations and government departments, higher learning institutions and law enforcement to come and provide information.
“There will also be information given about scholarships and funding for entrepreneurs,” Baatjies said.
He added that Emile’s Driving School will also be on hand to offer 60 candidates the chance to obtain their learners’ licence.
“Many of our youth don’t have the means to go to these institutions to go an enquire about employment or study opportunities.
“We need to bring those institutions to them. Even if we reach just ten people, we would make a difference in the lives of those ten young people.” For more info contact Baatjies on 073 367 3226 or 041 458 1110.
