SHOWVILLAGE United Brothers’ annual youth tournament started with a bang at the Motherwell NU 9 Stadium and the Nelson Mandela Freedom Peace Park Grounds in Showvillage on Saturday.
The senior teams were divided into groups and played a round robin format, with the top teams heading for the semi-finals.
The junior teams also played a round robin format. The senior teams played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium, while the junior teams faced each other at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Peace Park Grounds.
According to Showvillage chairman, Lukhanyo Wasa, the motive behind their project was to keep the youth informed of the significance of June 16.
Wasa also stated that the event would attract the youth to the field in order to keep them off streets.
“There will be speakers who will inform the youth of the significance of June 16.
“Today there are different kinds of social ills that face our youth in our society. So, the youth will be equipped with life skills and live music will keep them entertained.”
Super Eleven player Reason Fountain said that the tournament was a proper platform to unearth talent.
“This tournament is about enjoyment and talent search. This is the right opportunity for the youth to showcase their talent and skills so that the spectators are entertained. Our side comprises experienced players who are good role models.
“The youth will benefit from our side.”
The game that kept fans on their feet was between Super Eleven and Ikamva Movers, which Eleven won 2-1. Freedom Funani and Ayabonga Tofile scored a goal apiece for Eleven FC, while Siphmelele Mgwetyana scored Movers’ consolation goal.
