THE 2018 Showvillage United Brothers June 16 Annual Youth Tournament turned out to be a resounding success.
Showvillage United hosted the knockout stages of the finals at the Motherwell NU 8 open fields on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament started off in a round-robin stage at the Motherwell NU 9 Stadium last Saturday.
Supporters braved the chilly, windy weather conditions to see their favourite sides battling on the field. In the seniors’ semi-finals, Crystal Palace FC booked themselves a spot in the finals after they eliminated Three Touches FC 3-2 on penalties after a goalless full-time score.
Fans also saw a David and Goliath encounter in which Soweto Angels FC earned a hard-won 1-0 victory from the gutsy and experienced Super Eleven FC. The Veterans, as Super Eleven FC are known, failed to force the game into a penalty shoot-out after Nkosinathi Reason Fountain missed a goal from the penalty spot.
Angels walked away with a floating trophy, R3 000 and 20 gold medals, while Super Eleven went home with R1 000 and 20 silver medals.
Showvillage United’s chairperson, Lukhanyo Wasa, said the losing semi-finalists would take each other on in the losers’ finals. The date for the finals will be announced soon.
Wasa thanked the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) for sponsoring the medals.
“I want to thank NMBM for making this tournament a success. Our club does not have funds, but we managed to dig deep into our pockets to buy the trophies for the tournament. The sponsorship of medals from NMBM came in the nick of time. The clubs and supporters are worth mentioning because they exercised high levels of discipline throughout the tournament.
