NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Public Health and Parks Directorate, led by portfolio head Councillor Lance Grootboom, opened six parks in the KwaNobuhle area on June 28.
The parks are at Ngeqakhe and 4th Avenue in Ward 42, Kini-Kini and PJ Gomomo in Ward 43, and Mali Street and Sigila Street in Ward 47.
The newly upgraded and renovated parks used to be dump sites that were an eyesore to the community and have now been converted into beautiful playgrounds for children to play and for adults to use as gyms.
“The newly renovated parks are equipped with gym equipment that will assist, encourage and benefit the community to exercise in order to fight obesity and ailments,” Grootboom said.
The new facilities will provide many hours of entertainment for the children and keep them off the streets and away from dirty dumping areas.
All the parks are fenced in to provide safety and to safeguard the equipment.
“The key to the success of these facilities is our collective awareness of just how important play is in the lives of children. Through playing, children develop independence and social and problem-solving skills. It is an excellent way of keeping children healthy and active.
“The opening of these playground represents one further step in converting and beautifying previously disadvantaged township areas.”
