LEARNERS of the Elundini Full Service School in Motherwell, together with community members, were shown the value of growing vegetables last Friday.
Gardens for Life and Mark Headbush Foundation spent the morning at the school, teaching learners and members of the community how to grow veggie gardens using simple resources at their fingertips such as cooldrink bottles, egg boxes and tyres.
The excited learners were told, among other things, that a simple packet of spinach seeds which costs R18 could make the enthusiastic veggie gardener up to R8 400.
Steven Barnard of Gardens for Life said, “This programme focuses on the development of children through the training, development and implementation of basic farming skills that is supported by agri-technology.
“The objectives of the programme are to create an awareness in children about the need for farming as a sustainable source of food and to encourage self-sufficiency and entrepreneurship.”
