PORT Elizabeth student, Sinelile Zulu, is one of 12 small business owners who recently received a cash injection and marketing support, valued at over R70 000, as part of Shoprite’s Hustle competition.
The student entrepreneur founded Fish and Chips on Campus at the Nelson Mandela University earlier this year together with two of his student friends.
The business is a 100% student-owned fast-food restaurant and was founded after two of the eateries on campus were closed down. Being students themselves, they knew well enough what food students wanted and decided to tackle the gap in the market.
The competition was open to small business owners who wanted to grow their businesses and have an annual turnover of less than R1 million.
In growing their business, the three friends hope to secure premises from where they can operate.
“We also dream of our business becoming a student-owned franchise where students can buy into it and spread it to their own campuses across South Africa,” said Zulu.
