THE Nelson Mandela University Disability Unit had a blast raising funds for a worthy cause on Casual Day this year.
Each year, on the first Friday in September, South Africans are encouraged to dress differently and wear the official Casual Day sticker to show their support for persons with disabilities. This year’s theme was “Be An Everyday Hero”.
The worthy cause helps to raise money for the disabled throughout the country.
The Nelson Mandela University Disability Unit identified the QuadPara Association in Port Elizabeth as the recipient of their ticket sales this year.
Ross Dakin, a first-year public relations student, helped the campaign sell a total of 450 stickers, which raised a grand total of R4 500.
Dakin was pleased with the university’s efforts during the campaign and encouraged more student participation next year.
The NMU Disability Unit aims at providing appropriate support services to empower persons with disabilities on campus and in the community. This empowerment occurs through education, training, and development – encouraging independence and active participation in the academic and socioeconomic world.
By increasing awareness about disability, the objective is to promote inclusivity and integration of persons with disability without discrimination.
