NELSON Mandela Bay baseball fans are getting a rare chance to see some of the nation’s best players in action at the 26th South African National Masters’ Baseball Tournament which takes place at Londt Park this week until Saturday, October 13.

All nine provinces are competing in three separate divisions, namely, Elite League, Vets Division (over 45s) and the Challenge Division.

In the Elite League, cousins Denny and Nantie Hayward, and Daniel and Raymond Coetzer represent the Nelson Mandela Bay team and they are hoping to bring back the gold.

In the MBA Elite Division, Keith Grobler (SA Master) and Denny Transell, who is participating in his 12th SA Masters’ Baseball Tournament, are extremely excited to let the games begin.

The tournament started last night, October 9, with a baseball reunion.

Joggie Carlson, Pietie Carlson, Willie Gouws, and Leon van der Nest among others were in attendance.

The baseball action kicks off today. From today until Friday the games will be played on three fields in Stella Londt Drive, Fernglen, from 08:00 each morning.

A softball friendly will also take place on Friday at 17:30, followed by a softballers’ reunion for all who have played the game in the past.

The Vets’ Final, Challenge Final and Elites’ Final will take place on Saturday, October 13, and the SA Masters’ squad will be chosen at the prize-giving.

Entry to the tournament is free.
