BAD luck followed Motherwell RFC this past weekend. They lost 22-19 to Hankey Villagers RFC in the EP Gold Cup finals and then the vehicle taking the players home was involved in a head-on collision.
According to Motherwell RFC’s head coach, Qondakele Sompondo, the vehicle transporting the players was involved in the accident with a white VW Golf in a head-on collision on the M19 (Swartkops Road) between Despatch and Perseverance.
Sompondo said, “Two people died who were passengers and three players sustained injuries. Our top executive officials, deputy president Sindaphi Windvoel and club secretary Lawrence Mitchell, sustained head injuries and broken legs.
All are in a stable condition at Dora Nginza and Livingstone hospitals.”
During the team’s narrow 22-19 loss to Hankey Villagers in Despatch, their tries were scored by Andile Rhune and the conversion was kicked successfully by wing Sithembiso Yona.
Front ranker, Bonani Norawana, scored an unconverted try.
Yona also converted three penalties.
