A PORT Elizabeth man from Kabega Park, suffering from aggressive colon cancer, had one final wish – to go to the sea before he dies.
Eric Garner was diagnosed with colon cancer in March 2017.
He was recently discharged from Life St George’s Hospital in PE to spend his last moments with his family.
Unable to transport Garner with a normal vehicle, his sister, Lorraine Harties, contacted Clint Kops, the owner of the ambulance service, Traumanet, for assistance.
“The family has been very emotional lately and with Eric having so much pain, we as family are not able to lift him and take him for a drive with the severe pain he currently has. The cancer has now spread to his liver, lungs, back and legs,” Harties said.
The paramedic immediately came to Garners aid and granted his last wish – to see the ocean one last time.
“When the patient’s sister approached me with the request, I could not refuse. I told my crew about this and everyone was eager to help.
“When I saw Eric’s face light up, it made all efforts worthwhile,” Kops said.
Garner said, “I just wanted to go out and not be stuck in a hospital bed or at home. When my sister asked me where I wanted to go, the ocean was on top of my list. I’ve always loved the ocean.”
Although Garner’s cancer made his body weak, he still experiences some good days. I’m so grateful to the paramedic who took time out of his busy schedule to accommodate me.
“The trip to the ocean was peaceful and very comfortable. My wish was granted by an angel,” Garner said.
Celebrating World Cancer Day on Monday, February 4, Garner will reminisce about his day spent at the ocean surrounded by his loved ones.
