AN area in Walmer has been revealed as a theft hot spot following a recent spate of break-ins to motor vehicles.
This after several incidents of theft occurred at the recycle bins adjacent to the parking bays of the Methodist church in Main Road.
Residents in the Walmer area, who fell victim to the theft incidents, expressed their concern and warned others to be more vigilant.
One of the residents, who wishes to remain anonymous, urged the community to be more security conscious after his wallet was stolen from his vehicle.
“My wallet disappeared from my vehicle’s door compartment while off-loading old newspapers.
“The thieves’ modus operandi is simple – after you have opened your vehicle door or boot to offload the recyclable material, and turn towards the bins and concentrate on depositing the material in the correct bin, you have turned your back on your unlocked vehicle. During those few seconds that items are taken from your vehicle. I noticed that almost every visitor is making the same mistake,” he said.
According to the residents, these offences have targeted unlocked vehicles with offenders stealing property such as wallets and electronic devices that have been left in the vehicles.
The resident added, “While searching for my wallet, I learned that a cellphone and handbag were also taken from vehicles earlier that day. I returned later to again search for my purse, noticed children watching the bin area and they quickly disappeared when I walked towards them.”
When PE Express visited the site, residents simply ignored the warning notices posted when quickly off-loading recyclable material, and left their cars unattended.
According to the ward councillor, David Hayselden, the increase in unemployment plays a role in crime in the area.
“The residents have alerted me regarding the theft hot spot and we have reported the incidents to the South African Polices Services (SAPS) and Metro Police.
“However, by the time the officials show up, the perpetrators are gone,” Hayselden said.
A case has been opened and is currently under investigation.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Priscilla Naidu, vehicle owners are reminded to take simple security measures and ensure their vehicles are locked and secured when left unattended and to remove valuables from their vehicles.
“I can confirm that a case of theft out of a motor vehicle was opened in February.
“The case is under investigation and we will alert the person if any new evidence has been found,” Naidu said.
