IN an effort to beautify the city, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s (NMBM) Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Directorate is investing an amount of R26,9 million into the upgrading of beaches, parks and cemeteries in areas across the metro.
The proposed upgrades include the fencing of cemeteries and parks, tarring of roads and the construction of sidewalks, building of outdoor gyms, planting of trees, and the upgrading of benches, tables and braai facilities.
Mayoral committee member for public health, Councillor Yolisa Pali, said they were working towards creating a sustainable city.
“A city that takes care of its people and environment. We will not only plan for this, we will invest money to delivery for our people,” she said.
A total sum of R6,2 million will be spent on fencing in Bethelsdorp (Wards 34 and 25), while a further R1 million will be spent on upgrading braai facilities in Summerstrand (Ward 1).
The remaining amount of R19,7 million will be spent on the establishment of parks and sports fields in North End, Holland Park, Kwazakhele, Zwide, Chatty, Bethelsdorp, Dwesi Extension and Motherwell, for the enjoyment of children and community members.
