A GROUP of 15 learners from the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro have been given the chance of a lifetime to visit Oldenburg in Germany in April, as part of an exchange programme.
This exchange programme will bring youth from both countries together for 16 days to share experiences and insights and contribute to creative youth development initiatives.
The primary focus of the programme is on positive youth development which addresses confidence, competence, character, connectedness and civic involvement.
Among the 15 learners is Anastacia Williams, a 17-year-old learner from Gelvandale High School who has been selected out of 30 youth to participate in the programme.
“I was given this opportunity to exchange valuable learnings that can contribute to creative youth development initiatives. I express myself through poetry as I am a member of the Helenvale Poets,” Anastacia said.
The programme will create awareness to withstand the widespread negative influences in communities. In addition, it will provide the youth with opportunities to address negative influences such as gangsterism, drugs and crime.
“I come from a community where gangsterism, drug abuse, and violence, are increasing everyday.
“However, this programme will help me to take a chance and rise above my circumstances,” Anastacia commented.
The dedicated Anastacia will be part of a two-year youth leadership programme and in return, the German youth will visit South Africa next year.
“I am extremely excited to be part of this programme.
“It will be my first time travelling overseas. I am grateful and very humbled to have received such an opportunity. I want to help people in my community and one day become a doctor and opportunities like this will help me along the way,” Anastacia added.
Although the programme will be covering the travelling costs and accommodation, funds are still needed for other necessities.
Anastacia added, “The programme will give me a chance to do some good for my community. I’m looking forward to going to Germany, learning new things and meeting new people.”
