HAND-KNITTED and crocheted scarves recently lit up Villiers Road in Walmer in celebration of Nelson Mandela month.
Now in its sixth year, this nationwide initiative has proved to be hugely successful, whereby thousands of scarves are draped around trees and poles and hang resplendent for the taking by passersby in need.
A note is attached to each scarf – “I am not lost, if you are cold and need me, please take me.”
According to one of the organisers, Jacquene Anderson, this note is for all passersby who are in need of a little warmth during winter.
“67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has an annual secret scarf mission project, fondly known as the #SSS.
“We do this every year during Mandela month and we are doing our part to help the less fortunate nationwide.
“We hope that our scarf initiative will bring some warmth to those in need,” Anderson said.
KnitWits for Madiba around the country have been knitting and crocheting beautiful scarves, which were recently distributed. These handmade scarves are made with love, to keep people warm in winter and are always distributed in July in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s birthday.
The scarves were beautifully hung on a fence on a field in Villiers Road.
This was the perfect spot for the distribution of the scarves as residents in Walmer daily use the field as a thoroughfare from the township to shops in Walmer.
One of the passersby who received a scarf said that he stayed in a shack in Walmer and during the winter, the cold was unbearable. “We try not to make a fire in the shack because of all the shack fires in Walmer.
“When it’s winter, we always need blankets and warm clothes.
“This scarf will help me stay a little warm during winter and I am very thankful,” he said.
