STAFF and students from the Independent Institute of Education’s Varsity College PE recently handed over stationery, lunch boxes and a small treat to Dias Farm School in Seaview and Fontein Primary School in Gelvandale.
Chante Hugo, who is in the third year of her IIE Bachelor of Education in foundation phase teaching, and Andrea Williams, a second year IIE Bachelor of Education student in intermediate phase teaching, realised the need for stationery items at the schools while volunteering their time at Dias Farm School and Fontein Primary School. This then led to the IIE’s Varsity College School of Education holding a stationery drive during the months of May and June for the two schools.
Third year IIE Bachelor of Education in foundation phase teaching student and class representative, Jessica Springer, spearheaded the drive and made 145 pencil cases, so that each learner at Dias Farm School would receive one.
Stationery items collected included pencils, pencil crayons, Pritt, erasers, sharpeners, scissors and paper.
“This initiative is close to my heart as it is a platform to provide learners with the necessary tools to improve their educational experience,” said Springer.
Williams, who volunteered at Fontein Primary School said, “Seeing the need for stationery is what motivated me to assist with this initiative. It’s one way we can make a difference”
“I am very proud of our students who freely gave throughout the stationery drive initiative. The value of giving is encouraged among our students and is evident in the impact they are making, whether it is by volunteering, assisting with initiatives or donations,” Earlene Jacobs, vice principal of student services, said.
