CAPE Town’s Coon Carnival is coming to Port Elizabeth in the form of a Kaapse Klopse Jol musical, to be staged at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre on September 7 by Cape Town based Main Events SA.
Kaapse Klopse Jol producer, Jayson King, is no stranger to his Port Elizabeth fans, following the successful staging of his renowned show, The Great Pretenders.
The musical will take the audience on a musical journey back to the days when Cape Town artists performed on the streets; back when the pavements were their stage and street lights were their spotlights.
The musical follows the journey to the emancipation of slaves and how that freedom is characterised and expressed through the colourful vibrancy characteristic of the coons.
The musical ensemble will include classics such as Hoe ry die Kaapse trein, Welcome to Cape Town, and Rosa, to name a few.
Classics from stalwarts like Shirley Bassey, Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong will be performed.
Joining King in the cast will be Deeno Abrahams, Rashaad Adams, Ruth Knight, Fuad Richards, Dennis Maart, and the famous Kaapse Jollers band.
Kaapse Klopse Jol will take place on Saturday, September 7, and will start at 19:30 at The Boardwalk Amphitheatre.
Tickets will cost R140 per person from Computicket or at the door from 18:30.
Fundraising organisations are welcome to purchase 50 to 500 tickets for R100 each, which can be resold at a price of R140.
