MANY months of dedication and hard training paid off for the Unified Taekwon Do’s Phoenix Federation team from the Eastern Cape, during the Unified World Championships hosted in Iguazu Falls, Brazil, from August 9 to 11.
Local resident, Sahyun-Nim Gerd Hummel, attended his seventh degree (master) grading and successfully passed with great accolades from the panel. This makes Hummel the first South African to reach master level in Chang Hun Taekwon-Do.
He also competed in his final world championship, ending off his long-time sporting career on a high by bringing home two gold medals in patterns and sparring respectively – making him the world champion in both events for his category.
As a whole, the team brought home 11 gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes.
