NELSON Mandela Bay continued where they left off in 2018, when they scooped 10 awards in various categories during the Eastern Cape Sports and Recreation Achievers Awards glittering function, which was held at the East London International Convention Centre on August 30.
Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, who opened the function, said, “Our provincial blueprint, the provincial development plan envisages ours to be an enterprising and connected province where all people reach their full potential.
“It is a plan that is entrenched on developing the human potential of our people in all facets of life.
“Sports and athletes in particular are an integral part of this vision, not only to strengthen social cohesion in our country but more importantly as a means of making a living.”
In the MEC Excellence Awards, Lorraine Deasy received a trophy and a certificate in aquatics development and administration within the Nelson Mandela Bay region.
In the Recreation Volunteer Awards, Isaac Barendse was presented with a trophy and a certificate in various sports developments in the Northern Areas. The Herald’s Vuyokazi Nkanjeni was voted Journalist of the Year.
Judo sensei, Sondisa Magajana, won the Sports Administrator of the Year award.
Gerhard Posthumus, who coached a Nelson Mandela Bay world star athlete, Luxolo Adams, was voted as the Coach of the Year.
The Sportsman of the Year for Persons with a Disability award went to the Bay athlete, Jaco Smit.
Sportswoman of the Year award went to the Bay powerlifting star, Elizabeth Barry.
World long jump star, Luvo Manyonga, scooped two awards in Sportsman and Sports Stars of Year.
Since he was involved in sports activities abroad, his elder sister received the prize of a new VW Polo sedan courtesy of Joma Sports.
