IN an attempt to create awareness of the high number of farm murders and attacks in South Africa, the 911-Riders drove from Port Elizabeth to Kirkwood Police Station last week.

More than a year ago, the 911-Riders vowed to tour the country to show their support for farmers and their appreciation to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for assisting affected communities.

They have since driven through all nine provinces.

According to Felix Meiring, treasurer of the 911-Riders, the idea started when they were just a small group of bikers enjoying a ride, when they were approached with a challenge from a concerned farmer.

“The farmer asked us what we were doing about the escalating farm attacks and murders. We looked into the matter and then vowed to make a difference.

“The bikers are riding to the farmers and police stations, in an effort to create awareness and are also mobilising bikers nationally irrespective of their allegiance,” Meiring said.

The group departed at 09:00 from Kings Beach in Humewood and made their way to Kirkwood via the freeway. Bikers from Uitenhage and Jeffreys Bay joined the ride to Kirkwood Police Station.

Meiring added, “Our first ride was in September last year, where we departed from Kings Beach and rode to Kabega Park Police Station. As a group in Port Elizabeth, we are now renovating Vistarus Mission Centre’s children’s park area.”

Their motto, ‘Ride for a cause’, made headlines in June 2017 during their first ride to Mpumalanga.

The group is not focused on fund-raising, but merely to align itself with the farmers and assist with worthy causes in the country.

“Our first ride was to Mpumalanga and that gave birth to the 911-Riders.

“The agricultural sector will forever remain our main objective. We will mobilise the biker community at least once a year for a worthy cause.

“December 1, is our next ride to create awareness of violence against women and children,” Meiring said.
