UNITED Comrades FC players and supporters were over the moon after their side defeated Golden Brothers FC 1-0 in the Build It U/13 Soccer Festival Tournament finals at Zwide Stadium on Saturday.
Zakhele Football Association (ZAFA) and Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) were required to register eight teams each for the tournament. ZAFA’s 16 teams had to play preliminary knockout rounds so that their eight teams could face ZWIFA’s eight teams.
In the semi-finals, Young Idols from ZWIFA lost 2-0 in a penalty shoot-out to United Comrades FC from ZAFA, following their goalless full-time draw.
In the other semi-final, Golden Brothers FC from ZAFA faced their home side Brazil Brothers, whom they overcame 1-0.
In the finals, Comrades registered an early lead after Xolani Bangani scored the only goal of the game that guided his side to a 1-0 win.
Comrades received a new set of kit, 16 trophies for each player, a winners’ trophy, 16 player kit bags, a team kit bag, 16 water bottles, a soccer ball and field markers, while Brothers received 16 players’ trophies and 16 player kit bags.
In the individual awards, Comrades FC skipper, Sivenathi Tom, won the player of the tournament award; Comrades FC goalkeeper Liyema Kakaza was voted goalkeeper of the tournament and Brazil Brothers striker, Asakhanya Nazo, won the top goal scorer trophy.
