THE Cancer Association of SA (CANSA) visited Media 24’s offices in Port Elizabeth last week to do breast and mole screenings for staff as part of Cancer Awareness Month.

According to Marius de Vries, community mobiliser for CANSA in the Eastern Cape, these workplace screenings are part of CANSA’s corporate wellness programmes.

In addition to on-site workplace assessments, CANSA’s screening and awareness services, conducted at their clinics, also includes pap smear tests for early diagnosis of cervical cancer, blood tests for men to help detect prostate abnormalities and blood pressure tests.

CANSA does mole screenings with a portable FotoFinder mole analyser to help detect warning signs on all types of skin at an early stage.

People who are found with a high risk of skin cancer are referred to a dermatologist. (Go to PE Express’ Facebook page to see a video of how the mole screening with the Fotofinder is done).

CANSA is a non-profit organisation that enables research with regard to lowering cancer risk, educates the public regarding symptoms and risk reduction, and provides care and support to all people affected by cancer.

CANSA also offers patient care and support. The CANSA care home in PE provides accommodation for out-of-town cancer patients undergoing treatment.

The CANSA Care Centres offer a wide range of services to those affected by cancer.

According to De Vries, they are always in need of volunteers. These volunteers are trained by CANSA.
