EASTERN Cape powerlifters battled the strongest in South Africa, at the SA Equipped Powerlifting Championships held in Gauteng recently.

Rising stars, Charnleigh Kotze and Sakhe Sinde, both novice powerlifters, gave their best performances.

Kotze achieved a 95kg squat, 50kg bench press and a new SA deadlift record of 127.5kg in the women sub-junior 63kg division.

The following Eastern Cape lifters also took part in the SA Equipped Championships:

  • Nicola Maritz, junior and senior, 57kg division, squat 120kg, bench press 60kg, deadlift 120kg
  • Elisabeth Barry, master 1, 52kg division, squat 117kg, bench press, 50kg, deadlift 120kg
  • Sakhe Sinde, men’s junior 74kg, division, totalled 500kg, with a 175kg squat, 120kg bench press and a massive 205kg deadlift.
  • André Ludik, men’s master 3, 120kg division, squat 150kg, bench press 115kg, deadlift 190kg.

These four are among the Eastern Cape powerlifters preparing for the SA Bench Press Championships, which will take place on March 21 at Cape Recife High School.
