ALTONA Primary School was abuzz with excitement last week as they became ‘dream makers’ to a special former learner.

Tanatswa (14) is an ex-learner of Altona Primary who longed to visit her school again.

When she was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, the doctors from the haematology ward at the PE Provincial Hospital referred this brave young girl to the Reach For A Dream Foundation.

According to Michelle van Huyssteen, the branch manager at Reach for a Dream Port Elizabeth, Tanatshwa did not realise that her dream day would start at Altona and was overjoyed to visit and see her favourite teachers again.

“Her maths teacher, a cancer survivor herself, gave Tanatswa a beautiful hope necklace as inspiration.

“Another brave young man, who attends Altona, was a dream recipient in 2019. It was so special when he surprised Tanatswa with her dream cellphone,” Van Huyssteen said.

Altona Primary supported the Reach for a Dream Slipper Day campaign for the first time last year and raised more the R3 000 towards children’s dreams. The school will be taking part again this year.

  • Slipper Day is held on Friday, May 8, and is supported by purchasing a Slipper Day wristband for R10. Funds raised aid Reach For A Dream in fulfilling more dreams.
