A JEWELLERY-making project called Izandla Zethu, which is run by non-profit organisation, Masifunde Learner Development, and supports out-of-school youth in Walmer Township, has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

By upcycling corrugated iron, these youth turn raw material from their surroundings into jewel pieces. The training is part of Masifunde’s Out of School Youth programmes which support and provide skills development to school leavers in Walmer Township.

In action at the Izandla Zethu workshop, is Luvuyo Phongolo, with a trainee.

The Izandla Zethu’s ‘Delicate’ bracelet has now been nominated for the prestigious national award for Most Beautiful Object in South Africa by Design Indaba.

“The nomination for the award shows that art and beauty have no boundaries,” said Jonas Schumacher, managing director of Masifunde.

Luvuyo Phongolo, the programme facilitator at Izandla Zethu, who works daily with the youth, said, “At our workshop, we turn something of no value into something great.

“The nomination by Design Indaba is an amazing success for our programme and we hope to find more supporters and voters for our African jewels.”

To support the skills development programme, products can be bought in the Masifunde Changemaker Academy at 23 Witbooi Street, Walmer Township.
