Malabar Primary School in Gqeberha has been awarded the title of the most participating school in the prestigious Horizon Mathematics Competition 2024.
The event, which was aimed at improving the teaching and learning of Mathematics in the deep rural and township areas of the Eastern Cape province, saw enthusiastic participation from schools across the region.
The competition, held at the Mandla Makupula Education Institute (MMELI) in Buffalo City, was a grand affair, celebrating the mathematical prowess of learners and educators alike.
The Eastern Cape Department of Education officially awarded the best rural Mathematics educators in a ceremony late last month.
Among the notable achievements, Malabar Primary School stood out for its exceptional participation, earning the accolade of the most participating school.
This recognition highlights the school’s commitment to fostering a strong mathematical foundation among its learners.
In another impressive highlight, Jarryd Froy from Grey Boys’ Junior School. secured third place in the Best Performing Schools category.
The Eastern Cape Department of Education Spokesperson, Mali Mtima, emphasised the significance of such initiatives, stating, “These types of programmes are important in fostering, nurturing, and encouraging the academic growth of learners in our region, and we celebrate them.
“The Horizon Mathematics Competition is more than just a contest; it is a platform designed to enhance learners’ cognitive abilities, bolster their confidence in mathematics, and deepen their understanding of numerical concepts.
“By focusing on rural and township areas, the competition aims to bridge the educational gap and provide equal opportunities for all learners to excel in mathematics.”
