THE Animal Welfare Society PE is urging animal lovers in the Nelson Mandela Bay area to continue supporting them financially during the Covid-19 lockdown period.
Their first big fund-raiser for the year, the annual shelter sleepover, has been postponed due to regulations enforced by the government. It will still be held later in the year, but the postponement comes at a critical period when funds are exceptionally low.
Janine van Zyl, of the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) PE, said the shelter had seen a large influx of strays and surrendered animals since the start of the year and having to delay fund-raising activities would have a devastating impact on their ability to care for new incoming dogs and cats.
“AWS PE remains open during the lockdown period in order to take in strays or surrendered animals. Operational staff continue to take care of the 200+ dogs and cats at the facility, but non-essential services, which unfortunately includes adoptions, have been postponed until after the lockdown,” Van Zyl said.
She added that a huge financial gap has been left by the temporary closure of the two Wagtails charity shops. The charity shops will, however, reopen after the lockdown has been lifted.
