NJOLI United Brothers FC (NUBS) legend, Phindile Kana, believes that the youth should grab opportunities that come their way with both hands.

Kana, who is also known as Papa, said that today the youth had more opportunities than his generation had. According to Kana, there were no facilities for them like quality football fields and there were no chances to play professional football.

The former left fullback said his elder brother, Zolile, who was the secretary of the Kwazakhele side, recruited him to play for NUBS.

He explained, “My elder brother never played football, but he was a boxer. He had a passion of sport. I was only 11 years when I started to play football. Whenever I played any game, my brother would motivate me.

“His motivation made me to be confident, strong and gave me a love for football. Our many supporters also played a huge role.

“Some of them would buy us football boots.”

In those days, the township games were played in the dusty streets. Be that as it may, the makeshift fields were surrounded by many supporters. He said that players during their time displayed high levels of commitment and discipline as well as football skills.

“Our coaches did not have any qualifications to coach football but they loved the sport. We played highly competitive football on fields that looked like gravel roads. We played to entertain our communities, not for money. Although conditions were not conducive, stars were produced,” said Kana.

He said the youth of today have more opportunities to turn professional.

“Despite more opportunities today, our children do not show any commitment. A handful of supporters watch the games.

“Today facilities are in abundance but our players squander their opportunities. They must grab the opportunities with both hands.

“Children must do good things that will impress their parents. They must refrain from taking drugs and alcohol,” concluded Kana.
