Dumani Primary School in Motherwell was the latest target of a robbery yesterday morning, November 5, leaving the school community in shock and distress.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 at the school located on Khwalimanze Street, NU2 Motherwell. Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg of SAPS Ikamvelihle confirmed the incident, saying, “SAPS Ikamvelihle responded to a complaint of a business robbery at a primary school in Motherwell. Upon arrival, the police officers attempted to gather statements from the teachers to piece together the events of the robbery.”
According to Captain Janse Van Rensburg, the members attempted to obtain statements from the teachers to determine what happened during the robbery.
Police opened a case of business robbery, and the investigation is ongoing. Preliminary investigations revealed that the robbers made off with laptops and cell phones.
“The members could determine that laptops and cell phones were taken during the robbery, and no further information is available,” added Captain Janse Van Rensburg.
The robbery has left the school staff and students in a state of unease. One parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “We received a voice note on the group chat from a staff member at the school, urging us to fetch our children as there was a robbery. She was in panic and audibly scared.”
“All I could think about was my child’s life, because these criminals have no mercy; they can harm even harmless, innocent children. We really need authorities to do something about the crime in Gqeberha. We are now even afraid to send our children to school,” the worried parent added.
The police are urging anyone with information about the robbery to come forward to assist in the investigation.
