FORMER PE Comets Basketball Club player, Lwando Cakwebe, has been hard at work, keeping the youth of Motherwell busy through sport.

Cakwebe was recruited by the PE Comets’ chairperson, Sibongile Fondini, in 1996 as a player.

He said that Fondini, with other members of the community of Motherwell NU 7, formed their club, which used the Motherwell NU 7 basketball court as their home ground.

“I started to play basketball at u/14 level, under the guidance of Fondini.

“Since I was an outstanding player, I got an opportunity to play for the Eastern Cape Basketball u/16 team in 1998. I pulled my socks up in each and every game; as a result I was selected to play for the provincial team during the u/16 championships.

“Things kept going well for me because I was promoted to play in PE Comets’ senior team in 2001. I enjoyed my game and Fondini said jokingly that I had the potential to be a good coach.”

Following Fondini’s advice, Cakwebe enrolled for basketball coaching level 1, which he managed to pass with flying colours.

He said that he had decided to help in developing the youth in sport. Cakwebe informed PE Express that he is coaching PE Comets’ u/18 and master’s sides.

He said that the youth should seize their opportunities in sport.

Cakwebe explained, “Today there are more opportunities which the youth should make use of.

“I am very pleased that the schools that I help train show a keen interest in basketball.

“Sport keeps the kids out of court and it helps them to think positively. Let us give our youth chances to showcase their talents. I give credit to Fondini and club management for opening opportunities to everyone.”
