One suspect died after jumping into a river whilst evading police and another was arrested following a business robbery in Greenbushes at the weekend.
According to police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, three males stopped outside a café in Old Cape Road just before 17:00 on Friday.
“Two got out, went inside the shop and pointed a firearm at the owner. They took cash, cigarettes and two cell phones,” Naidu said.
“A lookout for the getaway vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla, was immediately circulated on all police channels. Anti-Gang Unit members were on Baywest Boulevard when they spotted the vehicle and a chase ensued. Police fired two shots in an attempt to stop the suspects. The vehicle collided with a taxi on the N2-off ramp to Uitenhage Road near Sidwell,” she added.
The 44-year-old driver was arrested in the vehicle while the passenger (34) got out and ran. He reportedly jumped over the railings of the bridge and fell into a river below. He was also found to be in possession of a revolver and the stolen cell phones.
Naidu later confirmed that the 34-year-old suspect died in hospital yesterday morning (11 October). He had sustained multiple injuries when he jumped off the bridge.
The getaway car was reported stolen from Humewood earlier. The driver is detained on a charge of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
An inquest docket has been opened. The remaining suspect will appear in court today.
