GEMINEYEZ’ basketball stars played their hearts out and were crowned the Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral Cup Basketball champions following their 63-49 victory over Spartans Basketball Club during the final at the Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday.

Spartans showed a bright start to the game and had a comfortable 19-8 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game. Gemineyez came out strongly as they collected 11 points to level the matters 19-19. The action was very fast, and Gemineyez led 29–25 in the first quarter.

As the game proceeded, both sides displayed top-notch skills. Gemineyez increased their lead to 38-33 in the second quarter with Spartans also knocking on the door of their counterparts.

Gemineyez were 42-33 ahead of Spartans before the end of third quarter.

Gemineyez missed lots of points, as their front players missed golden opportunities, with allowed Spartans to catch up to 42-42.

Gemineyez launched more attacks on their opponents and retook the lead, 49-42.

Spartans decreased their deficit to 49-45, but it was clear that Gemineyez had set their sights on winning the tournament as they added eight more points on their score with their opponents scoring four points, leaving the scoreboard reading 57-49.

In the last minutes of the game, Gemineyez scored six points to seal the game at 63-49.

The defending champions, PE Comets, defeated New Brighton Knights 72-35 in the third and fourth places play-offs.
