Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Acting Mayor, Thsonono Buyeye, has sent his condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones to COVID-19, after the Provincial Department of Health reported that a total of 16 people had died due to the virus in the last 24 hours in the City.
Mayor Buyeye said: “We are deeply saddened by this news. It means many families have been affected and with some members possibly infected too. We wish the families strength during this difficult time. The new 16 deaths bring our total deaths in the City to 1 384 people who have left us due to this deadly virus.
“We are once again appealing to our residents to adhere to the regulations. You get old people who adhere to all the regulations in place but get infected because the youngsters they live with do not adhere to the regulations. COVID-19 is real, it is not a joke and we wish our residents could take it as such so that we can save as many people as we possibly can.”
As at 16 November, there were 4 324 active cases in the City, with 837 new infections recorded on Saturday, 14 November and 437 new cases recorded on Sunday, 15 November.
“Our hotspot areas include Motherwell, KwaZakhele and New Brighton but we are very worried about Chatty, Walmer and Central currently which are fast becoming hotspot areas too. COVID-19 cases are growing in these areas at an alarming rate,” said Buyeye.
