An elderly woman is in hospital after being stabbed during a robbery at a park in Inggs Ave, Penford in Uitenhage this morning (Friday).
According to a statement on the Atlas Security Facebook Page, the company received a panic signal with information of someone being robbed in this street.
“Armed Response was despatched to the scene, where a 62-year-old lady was stabbed in the head, neck and hand during a robbery of person incident, while she was walking across the park,” the statement read.
“Armed Response Officer B76 took all the details of the suspect and the hunt began. It didn’t take long to find the suspect as B76 swopped in on and apprehended him. The stolen items were recovered as well as the knife that still contained the victim’s blood,” it read further.
Police spokesperson, Capt. Gerda Swart, said that police do not have all the details regarding the incident as the victim’s statement still needs to be taken.
“She is currently in hospital and we won’t be allowed due to COVID-19 regulations so finding out the exact circumstances might take a while,” she said.
She confirmed that a 28-year-old man was arrested by a security company and that a case of robbery with aggravating circumstances is being investigated.
“The case was opened by police in the meantime. More information will be available later,” she added.
Atlas Security reminded residents to be mindful of their surroundings when in public areas and to reduce their risks as much as possible by walking in well-lit areas, walking in groups as much as possible.
