Police in Port Elizabeth are warning delivery drivers to take extra precautions and be vigilant when driving as it has been noted that delivery trucks are being targeted by criminals and their loads stolen.
During an incident yesterday morning two vehicles were recovered with their cargo in two separate incidents in the Port Elizabeth area.
It is alleged that during the first incident, at approximately 09:30, the 30-year-old complainant was driving a Toyota Hilux delivery bakkie when he was approached at the Stanford Road robot by an unknown male that pointed a firearm at him.
According to police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, the complainant attempted to grab the firearm and a struggle ensued. Another male approached and also pointed a firearm at the complainant.
“The complainant and his crew got out and one male got in and drove off,” Naidu said.
“The tracker was activated. It is alleged that the other male got into a car and followed the bakkie. PE K9-Unit members recovered the bakkie with all the stock in the Govan Mbeki-area. No suspects were arrested,” she added.
In the second incident, at about 11:00, the complainant (31) was delivering aluminium doors and windows at a house in Kwaza Street, New Brighton, when he was approached by two males as he stopped at the house.
“He was threatened with a firearm and dragged out of the vehicle. Both males got into the delivery vehicle and drove off,” Naidu explained.
“The community assisted and police were immediately alerted. The vehicle was found abandoned in D Avenue behind New Brighton Museum and the stock taken. Anti-Gang Unit members found the goods hidden in an abandoned building in Mama Street, Red location in New Brighton. No arrests were made,” she added.
Police are urging owners to take the necessary precautions in safeguarding their property while in transit and ensuring the safety of their employees.
“Drivers are to always be alert when driving, especially when at the robots or stationary.”
