Tenneco FC scoops three trophies
NELSON Mandela Bay Industrial Football Association (NMB IFA) unrivalled and undisputed league champions, Tenneco, are the only side that scooped three trophies during the association’s year-end awards function held at Gelvandale Stadium Hall on Saturday.
Sanlam Provincial Executive Director, Mvuyo Gomba, highlighted that Sanlam does not operate in a vacuum. Gomba said, “We, as Sanlam, do not operate in an empty space but we service people. Following the discussion with NMB IFA President, Sello Mokhosi, we decided to form a partnership with his football association. We sponsored NMB IFA for this season because sport promotes healthy living. Sanlam is extremely delighted to be in partnership with NMB IFA.”
Tenneco FC went home with trophies in the following categories: most improved team, team of the season, and league winners. Apparently, Tenneco finished in the eleventh position in the 2023 league table, but they lifted the league trophy without losing any games, and they only drew twice.
The Best Newcomer award trophy went to Durr Africa. Coega Dairy received a trophy for being the most disciplined team of the year. In the match officials’ awards, the whistle man, Thabiso Bassie, went home with a trophy. All the match officials received gold medals for their outstanding performance on the field throughout the season. Ways Naidoo, who was absent from the function, also received a token of appreciation as he ensured that the match officials were available during the NMB IFA games.
Mokhosi expressed his gratitude to Sanlam for sponsoring his association during the current season. “I would like to express my special gratitude to Sanlam as they injected funds into our association. Their contribution has helped to uplift the standard of our league. Furthermore, our thanks go to PE Express for publishing stories about our games. Lastly, our executive committee members, match officials, supporters, and teams played an immense role in achieving our goals.”
Atlantic Aces Athletics Club honour outstanding athletes
NORTHERN Areas-based athletics club Atlantic Aces held their end-of-season awards function at the Northern Areas Football Association (NAFA) Hall in Gelvandale on Saturday.
Atlantic Aces President, Derrick Hoshe, highlighted that the purpose of the function was to motivate their athletes who delivered excellent performances during the Eastern Province Athletics (EPA) 2024 season. Hoshe also stated that it had been hard work to market their team in order to achieve success. He mentioned that his club had limited resources, but they did not give up in their quest to realise their dreams.
One of the guest speakers, Judo Olympian, Michaela Geronay Whitebooi, stated that it took her a long time to realise her dreams. Whitebooi said, “It took me a very long journey to reach the Olympics, but I commend my judo sensei, Rodney Clemence, in Booysen Park. I was just nine years old at that time. I wanted to know about judo. That curiosity worked for me as I won all the fights in my category.
“I gained regional, provincial, and national colours. It is a great advantage to take sport seriously as I was spotted by the University of Pretoria, who offered me a scholarship to complete my tertiary education there. I would like to urge the youth in particular, to take part in sport and education seriously. Today, sport is a career.”
Hoshe thanked all the sponsors who made the event a resounding success and lauded former Atlantic Aces athlete, Shane Adams, who gave back to the club in the form of sponsorship. Many athletes went home with awards.
The major awards went to:
Sportswoman of the Year: Mecayla Kock
Sportsman of the Year: Caleb Lottering
