The
Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Police came to the rescue of a driver in a
bullet-riddled car, closed some establishments and issued numerous fines during
COVID-19 enforcement operations over the weekend.

Bay
Metro Police Commissioner, Yolande Faro, said owners of two bars and a tavern
were issued with R500 fines for non-compliance with coronavirus regulations and
nine taverns across Nelson Mandela Bay were temporarily closed for the same
reason.

“We
not only demonstrated our commitment as law enforcement to play our part in
fighting the scourge of coronavirus by assisting public health initiatives, but
also continued our normal law enforcement responsibility.

“This
was highlighted when our officers came to the rescue of the frantic driver of a
white Toyota Tazz shortly after he fled the scene of a shooting.

“When
approached by the driver while on patrol in Kinikini Street, KwaNobuhle, the
officers noticed that the back windscreen and a passenger window of the vehicle
was shattered due to bullet holes.

“They
secured the house where the shooting took place, recovered a firearm and
arrested a suspect.

“The
firearm was handled with the necessary care to preserve forensic clues and
handed to the South African Police Services for the necessary tests,” Faro said.

She
commended the officers for representing the municipality and the law
enforcement community-at-large well while on duty.

“We
are fortunate to have committed members who are willing to go the extra mile to
safeguard our community especially after the area under our jurisdiction was
declared a national coronavirus hotspot area.”
