A minor was arrested in the Qunu area, Bethelsdorp yesterday
for the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl at the weekend.
It is alleged that the victim was swimming in a dam in
Booysen Park with friends at approximately 14:00 on Saturday when the incident occurred.
She got out of the water to change and was approached by two males, after which
she was allegedly forced into nearby bushes and raped by both males. The victim’s
friends informed her mother and a case of rape was opened at the Bethelsdorp
police station.
According to police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van
Rensburg, the investigating officer followed up on information that led to the
arrest of a 16-year-old male. “One suspect is still at large but the
investigation is ongoing,” she said.
The teenager is scheduled to appear at Nerina House Juvenile
Court today on a charge of rape.
“Violence against women and children are a priority for the
South African Police Service, therefore every effort must be made to arrest the
perpetrator(s) and bring them before a court of law,” Janse van Rensburg added.
