A joint operation by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League shed light on illegal dog breeding as a major concern that requires much more stringent action in the Kuyga area.

In total, six puppies were confiscated and fines totalling R2 500 were issued.

Commissioner of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Police, Yolande Faro said that the operation not only uncovered the illegal breeding problem and associated illicit trade, but other issues as well.

“Dogs were also found chained and many home owners had more than two dogs on their properties,” Faro said.

She further said that they were keeping a keen eye on aggressive animals roaming the streets and potentially endangering the safety of residents.

“We took a decision that more operations are required to enforce the regulations of the Animal Protection Act and Municipal by-laws in the area.”

Numerous notices were issued to suspected dog breeders that will be followed up.

“In addition, the effort is a continuation of a successful joint initiative we started with our dog unit and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League in Gelvandale before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Unfortunately our dog unit is currently inundated with curbing a rabies outbreak and could not be part of today’s action.”

“I am confident that we can build on the momentum that we gained with the project to bring relief for abused animals as part of the Metro Police’s mandate to enforce by-laws in addition to our crime prevention responsibility.”

Other joint initiatives to enforce municipal by-laws include collaboration with the fire department and the building inspectorate to address problem buildings, and campaigns with the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, among others.

Cases of animal abuse can be reported at the Animal Anti-Cruelty League on 082 654 2852 or 082 470 4319.
