KWAZAKHELE-BASED Lovers Lane Netball Club (NC) have started a soup kitchen to assist desperate members of the community.

Lovers Lane NC president, Ntombekhaya Ngindana, secretary, Nosiphiwo Matota and head coach, Luthando Heshu, together with other members, initiated the project after they noticed that hunger and poverty were rife in the Seyisi area, where their club is situated.

Heshu said they noticed that many families especially the children, were sleeping with empty stomachs.

According to Heshu, they started the soup kitchen on February 2. It drew 37 children, whose parents are unemployed. Lovers’ players are asking for donations to keep the project rolling.

“We told ourselves that something should be done to help those in need. Our players come from these poor backgrounds. Ultimately, we decided that we should start a soup kitchen to help these people,” said Heshu.

Heshu also highlighted that they were raising awareness about COVID-19 safety rules and regulations for their players. After the soup has been served to the community members and players, the club management equips the players with life skills.

Heshu said, “We equip our players with life skills because all we wish for is that these children should know that education is the key to success.”
