Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a fatal collision between a metrorail train and a white Ford Icon just outside Despatch this morning.
According to police spokesperson, Capt. Gerda Swart, three people, two females and one male, died at the scene. Their ages are still unknown.
She explained that police and other emergency services were summoned to the collision today just before 09:00. “The incident occurred close to the railway crossing on the gravel road, Perseverance, Despatch. The circumstances surrounding the accident is not clear at this stage and it is under investigation,” she added.
According to the Port Elizabeth Traffic Updates Facebook Page, eyewitnesses on the scene claimed that the red light was on for the vehicle to wait while the train passed by.
The names of the deceased will be released after their next-of-kin are informed.
