A taxi conductor was killed after the driver of the vehicle lost control in Bethelsdorp today, March 4.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, it is alleged that on Thursday at about 08:20 a taxi was travelling in William Slammert Drive when the driver lost control of the vehicle which caused him to hit a brick pillar and overturn.
“According to the preliminary report, the driver alleged that he tried to avoid a pedestrian when he swerved and lost control of the taxi,” said Janse Van Rensburg.
“Due to the impact, the taxi caught alight and burnt out.”
Janse Van Rensburg said there were six people in the vehicle, four adults and two scholars aged 15 and 17, including the driver and the conductor.
She said there were two serious injuries and three slight injuries.
“All the injured were taken to hospital for treatment,” said Janse Van Rensburg.
“The conductor in the vehicle passed away.”
According to a WhatsApp voice note that has been sent to ‘Express’, the conductor allegedly helped the passengers out of the taxi before he died, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.
Janse Van Rensburg said a case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
