A truck was set alight and the driver so traumatised that he
had to be taken to hospital during protest action on the R75 this morning.
It is alleged that a group of community members gathered in
Uitenhage Road in the vicinity of the Chatty Dip and started blocking roads
with burning tyres. A cooldrink truck that was travelling from Perseverance,
was allegedly targeted by the protesters and set on fire.
Police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said
that no injuries were reported. “However, the driver of the truck was traumatised
and taken to hospital,” Janse van Rensburg added.
A case of arson and malicious injury to property was opened
at KwaDwesi police station and is currently under investigation. The road was later cleared and reopened
again.
