THE Motherwell NU 7 side PE Comets Basketball Club senior team finished the Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Association League successfully, being crowned champions at the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre on Sunday.

The Comets reached a milestone this season after playing against Rhodes University in a three-legged final. The Comets faced a very challenging Rhodes University Titans team, losing their first-leg final 95–94. Despite this loss, the Comets were compelled to win the remaining two finals against the Titans, who had put up a valiant effort in their initial encounter.

The second final proved to be a nail-biting contest as both teams set their sights on winning the league trophy. Nevertheless, the Comets’ never-say-die spirit helped them tremendously, as they registered a commanding 96–81 triumph over the Titans. With both teams equal in victories, the Comets proved beyond any doubt that they were the best of the two sides in their 88–81 victory over the Titans during the last leg final.

After a 74–69 victory over Rhodes University Staff in their second division’s first-leg final, B-Blessed Basketball Club came into the game as hot favourites. Fortunately, the KwaZakhele side did not disappoint their supporters, registering a convincing 81–62 victory over Rhodes University Staff during the last leg final.

The newcomers, Jay Bay Giants, who have shown an impressive performance since the start of the season, continued their strong play in the third division’s first-leg finals, earning a close 55–51 victory over Zwide Eagles during the last leg finals. In the first leg final, the score was 40–35 in favour of the Giants.

In the ladies’ finals, Madibaz took honours after registering a comprehensive 47–32 triumph over Gemineyez. The winning teams received floating trophies and gold medals.
