IT is the place where at least two generations of Nelson Mandela Bay musicians have bought their first instrument – family-owned Tempo Musik is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
The shop was opened by the late Neels Mattheus, who achieved “rock star” status after winning the first TV Boereorkes competition in 1980, according to his son and current co-owner of the shop, Deon.
He was working as a clerk, and realised that the fame TV brought him would help draw people to his shop.
“Dad put Port Elizabeth (Gqberha) on the map. He was in all the magazines. Visitors from Johannesburg would stand outside the shop and stare and point at him,” said Mattheus.
Tempo Musik has moved several times over the years, with musicians from novices to professional seeking it out at its new address.
“We are a destination shop.
“Our dad coined the phrase ‘Musicians at your service’. All of us are musicians, and we love helping other musicians,” he said.
Tempo Musik has remained in the family.
It is now owned by Deon and his brother, Kevin’s two children, Dillon Mattheus and Jo-Anne Nomsa Mattheus.
Kevin and Deon grew up working in the shop, and have seen first-hand how the metro’s music scene has changed.
“But it is still very strong. So many of the country’s top musicians and producers come from here, and the new generation is also making its mark,” he said.
COVID-19 has brought its own challenges, as have online sales.
“The problem with buying online is that the seller does not usually spend time with you finding out what you really want or need.
“If the instrument or equipment is not right for you or something goes wrong, you are on your own.
“We give advice and help our customers to make the right decision, and provide after sales service and advice,” Mattheus concluded.
