
A suspected repeat criminal was once again arrested during the early hours of this morning, 26 April by Mount Road police members while they were doing routine patrols in their area.
According to Col Priscilla Naidu, police spokesperson, the latest arrest was effected at about 02:45 when members spotted a black VW Citi Golf in Cape Road.
“The vehicle was familiar as police had stopped and searched this vehicle on a on a previous occasion. The vehicle was followed and the driver went into a garage. When he exited the convenient shop, he was approached and upon searching him, a packet of tik and a tik pipe was found in his left pocket,” Naid said.
A 9mm pistol and nine rounds of ammunition was found on the passenger seat under his backpack.
The 38-year-old man was arrested and detained on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of drugs and the contravention of the Disaster Management Act. He is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s court on Wednesday, 28 April.
“The same suspect was arrested on 22 March this year on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm, ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property.
“It is alleged that at about 15:45 on the mentioned date, the suspect was driving his black Citi Golf in Cape Road when he was stopped and searched. A 9mm pistol (serial number filed off) and ammunition was found on him. Several sunglasses and prescription glasses were found in the vehicle. He was arrested and in April 2021 he was released on R1 000 bail. The case is remanded to 21 May.”
The suspect will also appear in court on 19 May, together with his co-accused, on allegations of a house robbery in Broadwood, which took place in November 2020.
Mount Road Detective Trio Task Team arrested both suspects on 22 and 23 November 2020 respectively.
“It is alleged that on Friday, 20 November at about 20:30 a couple were having a braai at their Garth Road home in Broadwood with another couple when they were confronted by two unknown men. Both had firearms and threatened them. Cell phones, laptops, a TV set and other household items were taken.”
Police followed up on information received of possible stolen goods at a house in Koedoe Street in Gelvandale. The house was searched and three cell phones, a notebook, an external hard drive, a wi-fi router and other computer equipment were confiscated. “Further investigation led the team to a tavern in Durban Road in Korsten where more suspected stolen goods were recovered. At this place two laptops, two cell phones and two laptop chargers were seized. All the stolen property was positively identified by the complainant.”
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Luntu Ngubelanga, commended the officers for their alertness and intuition.
