Nelson Mandela Bay firefighters were still battling to extinguish a fire at a building in Swartkops Street, North End, late this afternoon (Tuesday, 18 May).

According to police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, Mount Road police responded to a complaint of a fire in this street at approximately 14:00 this afternoon.

“On arrival, the fire department was already busy extinguishing the fire,” Janse van Rensburg said.

She added that the building was evacuated and that no injuries have been reported so far.

This building in North End went up in flames this afternoon (Tuesday).

“The fire department is still busy on the scene,” she said at approximately 16:30.

Meanwhile, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality confirmed the incident on their social media platforms. According to a media statement by the NMBM, the fire is at the Old ICS Building in Slater Street. “It seems that the fire started in an informal shop on the second floor. Our teams are doing their best as the dry wood trusses and old car seats stored in the roof area, fuel the flames, making it difficult to extinguish the inferno,” the statement read.

“We would like to appeal to motorists and onlookers to not delay traffic on the M4 as it could lead to accidents.”
